Probe into doctor’s assault by police to start

POLICE say the investigations into a police brutality case against a doctor will begin next week.
Director for Police Internal Affairs Robert Ali said they would investigate the case regarding the alleged assault of Dr Newman Berry in Port Moresby by a group of police officers on May 31. He said the delay was because the investigating officers were engaged in general election duties.
“It is a serious matter and we have not forgotten about it,” Ali said.
“The investigation was put on hold because of the national elections.
“Most of my men were called to serve in the elections.”
Berry was allegedly assaulted by police officers at June Valley after returning from dropping off relatives living in the area.
He claimed that the officers had accused him of being a car thief even though he repeatedly told them that he was a doctor.
Berry sustained injuries which sparked a nationwide protest by doctors who were members of the National Doctors’ Association.
