Province prepares to assist EC

THE Southern Highlands government has assured the Electoral Commission to support the provincial electoral office in next year’s general election.
Administrator Joe Kaiyo said his government and the Electoral Commission had signed a memorandum of understanding a few weeks ago to support the office.
He said the government would provide its personnel and other resources to assist the electoral office.
Kaiyo said there were some failed local level government elections in 2012 and he did not want to see that repeated so strategies were being put in place to minimise problems.
“We will not let desperate people influence the outcome of the election and we will stand firm to make sure possible measures are taken to suppress these people’s plans,” he said.
Kaiyo said people should understand the processes that lead to elections, noting that it would ensure free, fair and violence-free elections.
The electoral office was locked and there were chaos after Jacob Kurap was appointed to replace former manager David Wakias.
Kaiyo said that Kurap was the new election manager and he wanted returning officers and assistant returning officers to work with him.
