Provinces agree to separate benefits

HELA Governor Francis Potape says an agreement he recently had with Southern Highlands Governor William Powi was for separation of benefits from PNG LNG and other oil projects.
Potape said the communique he signed with Powi was not to determine what percentage each province should receive.
He said this to clarify misconceptions on the agreement he had with Powi in Port Moresby.
Hela and Southern Highlands agreed to share development levy funds and LNG benefits.
Potape said both provinces would share development levy funds and LNG benefit streams “on a fair, equitable and justifiable basis.”
He said the agreement was “the first step towards formalising the split of benefits between the two provinces”.
“The signing of the agreement aimed to send signal a to government agencies to prepare formal documents for the two provinces to sign for separation of benefits,” Potape said.
“We (Hela and Southern Highlands) need to separate benefits before national election in 2017.”
