Prudent management of resources vital: Naqia

NATIONAL Agriculture and Quarantine Inspection Authority (Naqia) managing director Joel Alu says prudent management of resources is important for every organisation.
Alu spoke in Port Moresby yesterday during a contract-signing ceremony for 12 new staff members of Naqia after they completed their two-year cadetship.
He said despite the Government’s restriction of recruitment into the public service because of financial constraints facing the country, “Naqia has all its cadets on board as permanent staff because we managed our resources well and we spent only on priority areas”.
“We are in a time whereas everyone is putting fingers to the cash-flow problems, but in Naqia, we always take prudent control of our resources and that’s why we still have enough to deliver on our mandate,” Alu told The National.
Alu said  one of Naqia’s key areas is human development. “The Health Department is responsible for human health and we are responsible for plants and animal health.
“But we don’t have institutions in PNG that train quarantine officers and that’s why we train our officers.
The programme was started in 2012 and it will continue into the future.
Naqia does not receive funding from the Government but generates its own revenue to meet operational costs, Alu said. Twelve cadets in Port Moresby have signed their contract and the others in the country will sign theirs as well.
