Road authority urged to improve performance

ROAD Safety Authority has been urged to create an impact when conducting roadblocks in the city.
NDC Metro Supt Benjamin Turi told the authority during a meeting yesterday that they needed to check on buses causing traffic jams by stopping in the middle of roads and those taking illegal or unauthorised routes.
“Road safety for so many years has been working on the road but it has not made one impact,” Turi told The National.
“We are not spoiling them but we are trying to work with them to create more impact by targeting PMVs that stop in the middle of the road or block one side and pick passengers and cause a traffic jam.
“There are buses creating their own routes as well because there are buses not going to those places and some are unregistered and unlicensed and are not roadworthy.”
Turi said police would be assisting the Road Safety Authority with random checks and removing unregistered vehicles and those not roadworthy.
“I told them that they have to prepare their yard and get ready to start storing vehicles that are not roadworthy,” he said.
“They will randomly move around and pick on non-roadworthy vehicles and pull them off the road and also check places like East Boroko, Manu Auto Port, Waigani and Morauta after hours on buses causing congestion.”
Turi said that it was not an easy task for them but they needed to address the problems before major accidents happened on the roads.
Meanwhile, Turi said police would also be using roadblocks to check on stolen motor vehicles and wanted criminals hiding around in the city.
He said they would be providing a list of stolen motor vehicles.
