Scheme does not benefit local people

IT was reported recently that the prime minister allocated K250,000 to a community in the Huon Gulf of Morobe purportedly for a rural housing scheme.
A former MP is pursuing this project which may be similar to a scheme funded by Village Development Trust (VDT), a non-governmental organisation in Lae, of which he was then a director.
In that scheme, house owners would supply the timber, while VDT would supply the roofing sheets, nails and other materials apart from the design.
The success of the scheme helped to put him in Parliament for two terms. He lost the seat in 2012.
While the prime minister may have the discretion or prerogative to decide who to help and to what extent, he also needs to justify it when our hospitals lack the personnel and equipment to treat cancer patients.
The Angau Memorial Hospital is one of them.
Other priority areas include the Highlands Highway, the deterioration of other infrastructure around the country particularly in rural areas, defects in the rollout of the free education policy, health services, non-payment of bills, law and order problems, high unemployment, and power supply.
The prime minister has been preaching about living within our means due to the depressed economies experienced worldwide including PNG.
I therefore do not understand how he distinguishes between such a payment for a rural housing project with the daily issues affecting our country.
I see this payment as nothing more than a financial support for a political associate.
The VDT-designed house costs about K50,000 each so the K250,000 allocation is enough for only five houses.
How does this scheme benefit the community of Huon Gulf which is made up by the Wampar, Salamaua and Morobe LLGs?
My advice to the people of Huon Gulf is to vote only for candidates who can take our resource-rich country to the next level.
