Scholarship benefit students

MORE than K20 million has been spent on scholarships for  more than 20,000 National Capital District students attending various schools in NCD and throughout the country.
As per recent statistics and data obtained from the NCD governor’s Technical Vocational Education Training (TVet) office recently, the TVet scholarship programme since its inception in 2009 has seen more 20,000 students sponsored.
The total amount of funding invested in young Papua New Guineans under the TVet scholarship programme from 2009 to 2016 is K21,908,708.87.
Terence Moka, the executive officer to the NCD governor said this when addressing more than 40 NCD students at the University of Natural Resources and Environment in Vudal, East New Britain, last Thursday.
He was there to present a cheque of K38,901.60 on behalf of Governor Powes Parkop as part payment of school fees for 12 NCD students who were recipients of another of the governor’s scholarship initiatives – the school fee assistance (SFA) programme.
The payment was for 50 per cent of this year’s school fees while the parents were expected to meet the balance.
The SFA is another form of scholarship assistance apart from TVet which the NCD governor has initiated to support parents and families who are finding it hard to pay for their children’s technical and tertiary education.
Moka said the idea for such scholarships was to give a second chance to the unfortunate youths who had been pushed out of school.
The governor’s scholarships cover students attending various technical and tertiary institutions who are permanent NCD residents.
“With the scholarship he gives you,  you must be mindful of the role you are playing. Remember, you are here because someone believes in you so make use of this opportunity well,” Moka told the students.
He also congratulated everyone at the institute for not participating in the recent student unrests.
He said these are some challenges they would face as young people and future leaders and must make wise choices.
