School to close due to no funding, lack of facilities

A SECONDARY school in Port Moresby is planning to close its doors from next year because of the lack of funding and inadequate facilities.
Territorial Commander of the Salvation Army Colonel Andrew Westrupp told The National that it meant that classes at Koki Secondary School would end this year.
He said the school would no longer be able to offer Grade 9 to 12 classes “for the foreseeable future”.
Westrupp said this was due to the lack of funding, the insufficient number of students and the lack of adequate facilities at Koki.
As such, he said the school cannot be viably sustained any longer.
He said it had been a difficult decision to make because over the 10 years of its life, the Salvation Army through the school had been helping students in PNG.
The school will give the opportunity for students to end the school year successfully and support them in finding places in other schools.
“It is with the deepest sense of regret that a decision has been made by The Salvation Army to suspend all operations,” Westrupp said. “The school will be fully staffed and operational until the end of Term 4 – giving the students the opportunity to achieve the best possible results.
“This means that the students will continue their studies, sit for their exams, and receive transfer notices and report cards, provided all fees for this year are up to date.”
