School’s 20-year wait ends

AFTER 20 years without a classroom, a  community initiative has given a remote Central village school their very own double classroom.
Tubu Elementary and Primary School in the Nara ward of Kairuku opened its new classroom on Saturday.
The classroom was built by Digicel Foundation with support from Cheshire disAbility Services (CdS) and the Central administration.
CdS general manager Bernard Ayieko described the occasion as a great moment.
Ayieko said the school was an achievement of Tubu’s strategic plan set out three years ago. Digicel Foundation’s board chairman Douveri Henao told the students that they mattered more than the classroom because of their keenness to learn.
Henao said this desire to learn was the reason the foundation built the classroom.
School head teacher Emmanuel Oa said the school’s 71 students and community members were “very excited and happy to have their own classroom”.
