Security guards abuse of power a concern

A MAGISTRATE says security guards are supposed to be protecting lives and properties and not abusing that responsibility.
Waigani Committal Court Magistrate Cosmas Bidar made the comment during a case involving a security guard charged with touching the private parts of a 13-year-old girl on Oct 8 at Morata in Port Moresby.
“Many security guards are getting involved in crimes like stealing and rape, when they are supposed to look after lives and properties,” Bidar said.
Police prosecutor Joseph Sangam asked the court to remand John Bomai from Gumine district in Chimbu in custody because the father of the girl was threatening to harm him. He said the girl’s father armed with a knife had chased after Bomai.
But the court granted a K500 bail to Bomai with the conditions that he should stay away from Morata and remain at his residence at Wildlife, and to attend court at appointed dates.
Police allege that Bomai, a security guard with Corps Security Guards, sexually touched the private parts of an under-aged girl after she had returned from school.
The court  will return on Nov 10.
