Seminar participants urged to be critical with media info

A facilitator of the fifth media education seminars for Catholic schools in Port Moresby has urged participants to be critical of information they come across through the media.
Catholic Bishops Conference Social Communications and Youth Secretary Fr Ambrose Pereira who spearheaded the session said:  “May we be critical of what comes across to us through the media, creative and positive in what we post, upload and broadcast in the media.”
Focusing on radio, participants felt the pressure of creating their own jingle and radio dramas, experiencing how to produce and record their creations and listening to their own voices.
Participants went through the process of composing a jingle and presented examples of radio dramas.
A team from the Catholic radio station Radio Maria were on hand to provide technical guidance.
The students were challenged to record their creations.
The best creations would be broadcast on air.
A variety of jingles and reflective radio dramas with a positive focus have been recorded, each displaying the creative talent of the young participants.
The participants enjoyed the session and were satisfied with the organisation and content of the seminar.
Several of them expressed the desire to have more sessions of a longer duration.
They also expressed that in future sessions young people from different institutions should be brought together and that there should be a commitment to use the media positively.
Tabitha Tiopili, from the Don Bosco Technological Institute in Boroko, said: “The sessions on digital media were new and interesting.  I am satisfied that I have learnt something worthwhile.”
