FIGHTING fire maybe their main role but it is not their only role.
The fire brigade also does emergency rescues from situations such as road accidents and high buildings and structures.
Lae Fire Services superintendant Bal Kena made the comments during the Morobe Show when fire fighters demonstrated fire-fighting and rescue skills.
“The purpose of our demonstration during the show was to educate the public about our roles in the society,” he told The National.
He said apart from fire-fighting, they were also trained in rescue operations.
“We have the equipment to conduct road accident rescue, where a vehicle crashes and its passengers are trapped inside,” Kena said.
He said that the brigade had equipment to cut through car wrecks and mangled metal.
“With population increasing, the number of vehicles were also increasing on the roads,” Kena said.
“People should contact if passengers are trapped in wrecks,” he said.
He said fire safety was everyone’s responsibility and people needed to know the basics of fire prevention.
“It is also important that everyone should know how to use a fire extinguisher, fire extinguishers should also be available in every building,” Kena said.
