THE renovated Lae District Court house was opened by Chief Justice Sir Salamo Injia on Friday in Lae.
Sir Salamo said when he was first assigned to Lae in 1999, the building was a fire hazard.
He said the judiciary had provided funding to improve the facilities and the capacity of the Lae court in terms of extra magistrates and judges.
Over the past 18 years, the judiciary had spent K8 million in upgrading facilities. Sir Salamo said the National Court would move to a location at the old Lae airport leaving the current court building to the district court.
He said construction work for the project has begun.
“Funding is available for this project with fencing in place and construction work has begun at that location,” he said.
He said magistrates and judges could only execute their functions in court rooms or in  chambers.
