New Ireland Governor Sir Julius Chan yesterday announced his interim provincial executive council (PEC) sworn in by Magistrate Annete Madu.
It was followed by the first New Ireland government cabinet meeting after the general elections.
The five members sworn in were Sir Julius, Nimamar president and deputy governor Ambrose Silul, Sentral Niu Ailan president Graham Lali, Murat LLG acting president Edwin Maingen and Tikana acting president Nangkos Kaklavui.
In his address to the PEC, Sir Julius said the caretaker government was sworn in so that work continued for the people of New Ireland while awaiting the formation of a cabinet proper in the coming weeks after the first provincial assembly, expected  next month.
“I am very confident today that together we will climb mountains, cross rivers and break boundaries to ensure that my people, your people, our people of New Ireland will have a better future and we are a government  for the people, charting the way for a greater autonomous New Ireland,” Sir Julius said.
“I am the captain of the ship and I know where my destination. I am urging you all to row with me harder so we reach our destination –autonomy for the people of New Ireland.”
Sir Julius said the New Ireland government would focus on a New Ireland Bank, New Ireland University and ensure that resource owners have a greater say in benefit-sharing of wealth from resources.
“I run a very efficient government. We don’t play around, we are in serious business.
“I have been mandated by the people of New Ireland, entrusting me with a greater responsibility to ensure that their lives and lives of their children and their children’s children are bright and promising,” he said.
