Soldier jailed for sexual assault

A SOLDIER in Western has been sentenced to serve 12 months in prison for sexually assaulting a woman.
The Tabubil District Court last Wednesday found Corporal Laurence Kilya, 48, from Sepundis village, Wapanamanda, Enga, guilty of assaulting a woman by holding her breast and squeezing it three times. It was alleged that on Wednesday, November 16, the victim and the soldier were travelling on the same bus from Ningerum to Tabubil.
Kilya, was consuming alcohol while travelling on that PMV bus and approached the victim and tapped her on her shoulder and was warned by her husband not to touch her.
When they reached the security check point at Tabubil, all passengers were told to disembark for a security check.
It was alleged that when the victim tried to move out of the bus the soldier stood at the door way and stopped her from going out.
When her husband and the PMV crew saw that they told him to move and let the victim go, but he refused.
He then held the woman’s breast and squeezed it as she yelled at him and pushed his hands away.
Police arrived on the scene and tried to apprehend him but he resisted.
Police then used force to put him into the police vehicle and brought him to Tabubil police station, where he was formally arrested and charged for assault and resisting arrest.
Kilya is detained at Tabubil police station awaiting his warrant of commitment to be transported to Ningerum jail to serve his term.
He is attached with the Charlie Company at Kiunga forward operations base.
