Statistics office reports progress

THE National Statistical Office has achieved a lot under its reform activities since last year as activities progress on smoothly, says national statistician Roko Koloma.
He said the NSO management started reforms in 2014 though the official reform activities commended.
The main achievements include the delivery of 2011 Census reports, national and regional reports, the production of the NSO corporate plan (2015-2019), rebase of the consumer price index, production of the yearly activity calendar, production of PNG standard industrial classification and production of a census registry unit.
The Government directed an overhaul of the organisation to ensure timely production and the release of quality economic and social and demographic statistics.
Koloma said a steering committee was set up comprising the Department of National Planning and Treasury and Bank of PNG to ensure the progress of the directive.
“A team from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Australian Bureau (ABS) were engaged to do the initial review.”
The team recommended that ABS would assist NSO in the reform process.
“The ABS team in consultation with the NSO and other stakeholders drew up the reform roadmap which the reform steering committee endorsed that will guide the NSO in the process.
“The reform activities have progressed well since last year.”
Koloma said a partnership arrangement was also established between the NSO and ABS. under the arrangement two consultants from ABS are stationed in NSO assisting the economic statistics division.
