Strong south-east trade winds are expected at this time of the year, according to the National Weather Office (NWS).
Assistant director Jimmy Gomoga told The National yesterday in Port Moresby that the trade winds were at their peak and the NWS issued strong wind warnings during.
Gomoga said warning was currently in force for the southern coastal areas and the Vitiaz Strait and people living along these areas must take precautions.
“Seafarers, fishermen, women and children should not go too far to fish or for any other purpose,” he said.
“Such winds normally cause high tides on the surface of the sea and that it is not safe to fish with floaters or canoes, instead they should use outboard motors.”
According to the weather observation data released by the NWS, wet conditions in the Southern and Momase regions are likely to continue until mid-August.
Gomoga said that Western, Gulf, Milne Bay and Central provinces in Southern region and Morobe would experience some rainfall during the dry season.
He said as a result of these wet conditions, polling in parts of these provinces had been deferred or delayed.
