Students informed about how to join police force

Eighteen Bomana Police Training College officers conducted an awareness session for Grade 11 and 12 students at Kwikila Secondary School on how to apply to join the force on Wednesday.
The team was led by training commander Chief Superintendent Perou N’Dranou.
They aimed to inform students about recruitment criteria, training processes, post training activities and opportunities offered under the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC).
Recruiting officer Senior Sergeant Justus Baupo said most Grade 12 students from Central province did not show interest in joining the police.
“A classic example is when the Bomana Police Training College set up stalls in careers expos in secondary schools in NCD, most Central students tended to ignore us,”Baupo said. “They didn’t even consult us to find out what else the force offers apart from just being another job opportunity. That is why we are now coming directly to schools to promote what the police force has to offer.”
Baupo said the college would be recruiting directly from schools from now so there is equal participation in RPNGC from all regions, unlike past recruitments when notices where published in newspapers and candidates had to apply.
This type of recruitment is encouraged for  close scrutiny of students through school-guidance officers. This is to ensure the college receives the best candidates. Priorities will be given to marginalised regions that have the minority in the RPNGC, and Central province was no exception.
Kwikila Secondary School principal Kaia Thoa acknowledged the initiative taken by the police college to conduct the awareness at Kwikila Secondary.
Thoa said such awareness was rare.
