Sumkar games promote positive living: Deme

THE week-long Sumkar District Games ended on Monday at Kinim station on Karkar Island, Madang.
Event chairman Atis Deme said the games attracted hundreds of youths in the district.
He said the district games was an annual event initiated last year to unite young people and to change their mindset and help them move forward in life.
Atis told The National that games such as soccer, volleyball, rugby touch, basketball and darts were played by teams from different parts of the district.
“The purpose of this game is to bring youths from the district together to compete and promote positive thinking so that they refrain from illegal activities,” Deme said.
He said since the district games started last year many youths have developed interest in sports and this had seen an improvement in law and order in the district.
“This is also an avenue to select our best athletes to represent Sumkar in the provincial games and some might even make it as far as the PNG Games next year.”
Atis also acknowledged Treasury Minister Patrick Pruaitch as the major sponsor for providing K20,000 to help facilitate the games.
