POLICE have charged a man with causing the death of his girlfriend while driving five months ago.
Also charged this week is another man accused of causing death of a pedestrian while driving as well.
In the first case, Richard Jason Magiau Namaliu, 25, from East New Britain, was charged with the murder of his girlfriend Ruby Laufa, a law student at the University of Papua New Guinea and former Miss PNG.
Police said investigations were ongoing because there were no witnesses.
“It took police five months to investigate the case which is now before the court,” NCD officer in charge for traffic Philip Koliadi said.
“Namaliu remains in custody and will not be allowed police bail,” Koliadi said.
“His bail will have to be applied for and granted (or not) by the court.”
In the other case, Lita Gui, from Rigo in Central, was driving on Waigani Drive on polling day when he allegedly hit Merelyne Bele, 40, originally from Laiagam, Enga.
Bele was returning from a haus krai and crossing Waigani Drive opposite the Waigani police station when she was struck. She died on the spot.
“Gui remains in police custody,” Koliadi said.
