Suspect killed in shootout

A SUSPECT was shot dead following an armed robbery in Kimbe, West New Britain, yesterday morning.
Provincial police commander, Supt Jim Namora confirmed the incident which occurred at the Nuovo International Scrap Metals Ltd yard.
Four men armed with three homemade guns and bush knives stole properties and cash totaling K8306 from the company workers.
Namora said the robbers were intercepted by police involved in election security operation who pursued the suspects on foot and shot and killed one member of the gang at Section 21 bush camp.
The other three managed to escape with the stolen goods.
Namora said the deceased, identified as Jerry Willie was, of mixed West New Britain and New Ireland parentage.
His body is now at the Kimbe General Hospital morgue. Police have started investigations into the incident and a coronial inquest is being prepared.
Namora said the situation in Kimbe was generally quiet.
Counting for Talasea Open electorate and the provincial seat started after a lengthy delay on Tuesday.
Candidates and scrutineers raised concerns over possible foul play when they suspected that ballots in one box were marked by a single person on behalf of other voters.
Election manager Emily Kelton has tasked the returning officer to look into these concerns.
