Tabua, Aisi set for U18 international debuts

FOR young basketballers Ivan Tabua (Daru) and Donna Aisi (Kerema), being named in the Papua New Guinea men’s and women’s Under-18 squad is a pleasant surprise.
The PNG U18 team will travel to Fiji for the FIBA Oceania Championships in December.
Last Sunday at the Taurama Aquatic Centre, their solid performance during the PNG National U18 Championships earned them the right to represent the country.
The 17-year-olds have broken a barrier of sorts as the first two players from their provinces to represent the country at an international championship. They were speechless during the announcement of the training squad.
But there is a lot ahead of them, with squad training to take place in Port Moresby under their respective coaches and managers and also passports and levy fees to take into account.
Kerema Basketball Association president Aua Aisi congratulated Aisi for being the first women’s junior player from the centre to be selected for the PNG squad.
“I’m so proud of her achievement. Her selection is a credit for the association and her club,” he said.
