Tabubil to debut at rugby champs

WITH the National Provincial Sevens Championships just around the corner, the Tabubil Cats of Western are keen to experience the Oct 15-16 tournament in the nation’s capital.
Tabubil Rugby Football Union president Kelly Kesawe told The National that they would bring a side made up of local players residing in Kiunga and Tabubil.
“Our side is a young side, we’ve had couple of games earlier this year in Kiunga and Tabubil and we’ve put up together a 12-man squad for the National Provincial Championships,” Kesawe said.
“All our players are new and I am sure it’s going to be exciting for them.”
He said an invitation for the championshihps was sent to them by the PNG Rugby Football Union after seeing the progress of the code in the province and their recent participation in the Tulait 7s in Goroka last month (Sept 24-25).
“Being recognised by the PNGRFU is something big for us and I am sure the chance to take part in the championships will do a lot of good for our players here,” he said.
Kesawe said selections were made after trial games in Kiunga and Tabubil, then their recent participation in the Tulait 7s helped them to select their best for the major tournament.
Kesawe said the Cats aim would be to gain as much experience as possible.
