PEOPLE’S Progress Party candidate Emil Tamur, pictured, is the new member for Kokopo.
After the 23rd exclusion yesterday afternoon, Tamur unseated PNC candidate and sitting MP Ereman ToBaining with 8325 votes to 6711.
Kokopo returning officer Thomas Monep said only 55 per cent or 25,641 of the total voting population voted in the election.
Monep echoed similar sentiments raised by returning officers for Gazelle and Pomio that many eligible voters had missed out on voting because of the flawed updated common roll.
He said the PNG Electoral Commission must address this issue promptly.
He thanked the 25 candidates for putting their hands up to contest the seat.
Tamur said he was honoured, saying it was for the people of Kokopo.
Tamur thanked Monep and the election officials and security personnel for their hard work in completing the election process.
“The people of Kokopo have spoken, you wanted a change and you have spoken.”
Tamur said he would continue from where his predecessor ToBaining had left off and appealed to ToBaining for a proper handover to take place.
