TEAM Enga will put more emphasis on sports that have the best medal prospects for them at the 7th PNG Games in Kimbe next March.
Enga provincial sports coordinator Jonah McKay said their kickboxing, boxing, body building, power lifting and weighting lifting athletes were most likely to win medals for the province.
He said at 2014 PNG Games in Lae, Enga athletes performed well in these individual sports, winning 15 medals in total.
“Net year, we are targeting more than 30 medals, including gold, silver and bronze,” McKay said.
“Our snooker teams are also champions as they won a gold and silver in the 2014 PNG Games so we are also putting our hopes on our snooker players.” McKay said Team Enga was preparing well and all set for the PNG Games in Kimbe next year.
“The postponing of the Gamea dates has given us extra time to equip our athletes as most of our athletes are school students,” McKay said.
He said they had finalised their final squads for the team and forwarded the information to the PNG Games organising council.
“Now we are preparing ourselves to participate in the games.”
He said Enga had chosen 14 sporting codes and most of the athletes were prepared for the games.
“However, our emphasis is on kickboxing, boxing, weight lifting, power lifting, body building and snooker.
“Some of our athletes are taking part in some lead-up games in other centres like in rugby sevens in Goroka, Eastern Highlands, early this month, kickboxing in Kundiawa, Chimbu and the Besta Cup soccer in Chimbu. These lead-up games are equipping our athletes and giving them experience to be more competitive against other provinces in Kimbe next year.”
