AN undisclosed amount of money and computers were stolen from the Bumayong Secondary School in Lae by thieves who broke in during the early hours of Tuesday.
The theft followed a string of break-ins into the school’s premises recently.
Morobe education chairman Andrew Gena said he was informed of the break-ins by the school’s principal on Tuesday morning.
“The thieves held up the school’s security guards at around 3am after forcing their way into the school campus. They then broke into the school’s canteen and stole the weekly takings,” he said
Gena said the thieves also broke into the deputy principal’s office and stole some petty cash before breaking into the school’s computer lab and stealing computers.
“Reports are sketchy at the moment so the exact number of computers and amount of money stolen cannot be revealed yet. We are also waiting for police for their report as they arrived at the scene after the thieves had left.
“I condemn the actions of these criminals because many students would be affected due to their selfish act. I appeal to the community members near Bumayong to help identify the suspects,” Gena said.
He also stated that last week another break-in occurred at Busu Secondary School and he believed the break-ins were possibly by people residing near the school premises.
“How could people steal from institutions like public schools that provide services to thousands of students? I call on everyone to be vigilant and assist police in finding the suspects,” he said.
Attempts to get information from police were unsuccessful.
