NATIONAL Capital District Governor Powes Parkop has been elected for the third consecutive term.
Parkop, who polled 54,870 votes, finished way ahead of second-placed Michael Kandiu, who managed 26,870.
The NDC governor said the number of votes to his name was far more than in the last two elections.
“It’s a greater privilege to win the elections for the third time and I would like to salute our people in our city for their steadfast and staying put to the goals and the visions that we have set and believing in the future,” Parkop said.
“It’s a massive and overwhelming endorsement given to my governorship. It’s not about me, it’s about the journey we have taken up to now and what we will take in the next five years.
“I’m determined that we must get all the basics right.”
Parkop said it was tough, especially the wait and the delays that were getting longer by the day but it was a relief that the declarations were finally made.
“Its’ a big sigh of relief for me, today I came with emotions, but we have to rise up above this. The lessons have been learnt, we’ve got to change and we have to improve,” Parkop said.
“It’s not been easy for the election officials, and for me too. It was almost like a horror show, I faced this type of situation in 2012.”
“We have come a long way in Port Moresby but we have a lot of things to do and we can become a greater and better city that we can be really proud of.
“I’m ready to start rolling out my sleeve as from today to start getting it right again and getting our city going again.
“I want to thank the other candidates, it’s been tough but I appeal to them respect the final decision and I invite them to work with me. It’s not in my DNA to rig the election, to manipulate the system and it’s not something I want to live as my legacy, I’m here to maintain and bring our people to higher standard.”
“Today the people have spoken and let’s respect that.”
