TONGA’s High Commissioner Princess Angelika Latufuipeka Tuku’ Aho says the relationship between the countries dates back to the arrival of missionaries in Papua New Guinea decades ago.
Presenting her credentials to Governor-General Bob Dadae yesterday, she said the occasion spoke volumes of the continued diplomatic relations between the two countries.
“I am profoundly proud of this relationship, forged overtime immemorial which witnessed the arrival of Tongan missionaries to your shores leading up to the present day with the presence of a sizable Tongan community in your great country,” Tuku’ Aho said.
“Tonga greatly appreciates the enormous assistance to which Papua New Guinea has offered the kingdom over the years and in strengthening our diplomatic ties and people-to-people relationship.”
She planned during her term to forge closer relations particularly on trade and economic cooperation.
Tuku’ Aho succeeds Prince Tupouto’a Lavaka.
Dadae welcomed her on behalf of the Government and the people of Papua New Guinea.
“I also accept the trust and confidence placed on you by King Tupou VI in accrediting you as the high commissioner to continue the diplomatic and bilateral relationship,” Dadae said.
