Tourism Promotion Authority (TPA) has given K50,000 to a  new cultural centre and association launched on Friday at Alkena village in Lower Kagul LLG, in Tambul district.
TPA chief executive officer  (CEO) Jerry Agus while speaking on behalf of his office and the office of the Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Tobias Kulang, congratulated the developers of Enguwal Kuru Ware Cultural Centre for their effort.
He said Tambul had a lot to offer to tourism and it was encouraging for Councillor Nick Wai and his tribesmen to preserve their culture through tourism promotion activities.
He said tourism was: “When someone is paying for food and accommodation in another place.
“Tourism does not mean we have international visitors only.
“When a local pays to eat or sleep in your area, he or she is a tourist.”
He said tourism was not only a commercial activity but also an activity that preserved the culture.
“Our culture is dying so tourism is the only way to preserve it,” Agus said.
“Our culture is our identity and we must preserve it at all times.”
He was pleased with the efforts of the councillor and Lower Kagul leader Philip Talpa and Western Highlands tourism officers for organising the people to venture into the tourism industry.
