Traffic police warn drivers to be careful

Port Moresby’s 4-Mile police traffic section head Inspector Philip Koliadi is warning motorists in the city to be more careful and alert when driving in the city.
He raised the concern following  a number of accidents occuring in a week.
“It is just a trend where when we are approaching the end of the year, the number of road accidents experienced seem to increase in a short period of time,” Koliadi said.
He said most accidents were caused by drink driving.
“A few are caused by negligence,” Koliadi said.
On Wednesday a vehicle ran over a girl that resulted in her death on the Hubert Murray Highway just outside Murray Barracks.
According to police, Annmarie Makis, 16, from East Sepik and Central and a student at Caritas was on her way to school when the accident occurred.
They came out from the barracks gate just opposite SVS store and saw a school bus belonging to the Don Bosco Technical School coming at a high speed, police said.
Somehow the driver lost control hit the girl who was  dragged a few metres.
The bus driver was arrested and is in police custody.
Meanwhile, police have also arrested a senior police officer who was involved in an accident near Manasupe Haus last Saturday.
