PAPUA New Guinea’s leading female hammer thrower Jacklyn Travertz broke her own national record at the Pacific Mini Games in Port Vila, Vanuatu, yesterday throwing 41.22m behind Leina Durand of New Caledonia who won gold with a throw of 43.67m.
After setting a national record of 40.04m in the 7th PNG Games in Kimbe late last month representing Team NCD, the 24-year-old is improving as seen in her silver medal effort.
Settling for bronze in the women’s hammer throw was Papua New Guinea’s Sharon Toako throwing 35.50m
“I am very happy at the moment. I didn’t think I was going to get a medal and for me to win silver at the Mini Games is something big f and I’m aiming for gold in the 2019 Pacific Games, that’s my aim,” the lass from Western and West New Britain said.
“My coach Paul Bannister is also happy for me, he is like a second dad to me and I just want to thank him for being there for me and assisting me.
“The sacrifices have paid off, I am happy to be ending the year with a new national record and silver medal, it’s a good way to end the year.”
Travertz dedicated the silver to her late mother Gethrude Tavo Travertz. “I wanted to visit her grave after the PNG Games when I was in Kimbe but time didn’t allow and I didn’t travel to go and see her that is why I am dedicating this silver medal to her.”
