Unitech, Hekari 2 top FFPNG 7s


UNITECH Football Club of Lae Football Association and Prima Power Soccer Club of Lahi are the inaugural champions of Football Federation of Papua New Guinea’s Northern Conference 7s Challenge in the men and women’s divisions.
The two-day tournament (Friday-Saturday) of the shortened format of soccer, was sponsored by Mineral Resource Development Company (MRDC) and supported by Coca Cola Amatil (PNG).
In the Southern Conference, former Hekari United flanker Robert Esira Tonga, proved that he had a lot to offer when he led Hekari Team 2 to a 1-0 victory over sister team, Hekari Team 1.
Tonga, who dusted the cobwebs off his shoes after two years in semi-retirement, returned to inspire the second-string Hekari side to beat first-choice Hekari Team 1.
“It was a good feeling about winning after a two-year break from active playing.
“I was a bit rusty but am a happy man after winning the inaugural FFPNG Southern 7’s tournament,” he said.
In the third and fourth-place playoffs, Koupa came from 1-0 deficit to beat Kempa 3-1.
In the women’s final, NCDFA Team 1 thrashed Valley Strikers 4-1.
The Northern tournament attracted teams from Madang (Madang Soccer Association and Nabasa FC), Goroka (Goroka Football Association and Courts FC), Finschhafen, Bulolo, Situm and Lae City (Lahi and Lae Football Association).
In the men’s final, Unitech edged City United 2-1 in a penalty shoot-out and walked away with K4000 in prizemoney and the 7s Cup.
Prima Power beat Lae Football Association’s Wantoks 3-0 in women’s final for the division’s top honours.
