University must justify graduation fee hike

Letters

IN reference to a letter in The National on Friday (March 31), the University of PNG council has approved the imposition of a new graduation fee of K600.
The council has claimed that this brings UPNG in line with all other universities in PNG.
Based on that, the council should clearly explain why and how it imposed such additional fee.
As a final year student, I know the only fee payable is the gown fees apart from other unnecessary fees.
Moreover, the majority of the graduating students are still waiting to receive their school fee refunds from the UPNG accounts and yet the council is charging them for another fee.
Most of our parents are finalising their costs of attending our graduation and this new fee will give them another burden.
Therefore, I call upon UPNG council to publicly explain the reasons for this fee so that parents and graduating students will know before paying the fee.
