Divine Word University has recognised one of its graduates-turned-fashion designer for her creativity as well as service to society, according to the DWU community information centre.
Annette Sete, owner of Maku Gifts Shop and Lava Girl clothing and jewelry, was awarded the DWU Distinguished Alumnae of the Year (2017) on the university’s Alumni Day ceremony at the Madang campus on Monday.
She was recognised for her prominence in her chosen career as an entrepreneur as well as her service to society.
The information centre revealed that Sete was identified as creating employment for local people and engaging talented and potential people to share their skills and knowledge in the craft market through her prominence and business.
She was also recognised for her service to society through her initiative of Katim na halivim pikinini, a charity group which raises funds to support specialist doctors from Australia and PNG who operate on children born with defects.
Holy Spirit Sisters provincial superior and chair of the Distinguished Alumni Award selection committee Sr Anna Damas said Sete showcased what a graduate of Divine Word University should have.
She said while Sete developed her business, she also had time to support minority groups such as children born with defects.
Damas said she was a role model for graduates as well as current students of DWU as an outstanding female alumnus.
Sete’s role model, mother Angela Bugatar accepted the award on her behalf because she was preparing to attend a business forum meet in Australia.
Sete said in a pre-recorded video shown during the ceremony that she was ‘humbled and honoured’ for the university to recognise her work as a professional as well as a business person.
