Vegetable farmers need proper market place: Walep

A GROUP of vegetable farmers in the Highlands region is looking for a place to sell their produce.
Spokeswoman Roselyn Walep told The National that they used to produce more than seven to eight tonnes of vegetable to supply the Kutubu oil project and other companies and organisations through their North Waghi Farmers Association.
But the association is facing problems and they are trying to survive on their own.
“We are receiving training through the initiative of Oxfam International on how to grow crops and save money,” she said.
Walep told The National that it had helped a lot of them grow cabbages, lettuce, carrots, bulk and spring onions.
“Many of us are now planting the same kind of crops.
“We know very well how to grow and how to make money.”
But the problem is they need a proper place to sell their produce.
“Many farmers are now interested to grow more but we do not have proper markets.
Oxfam International has been doing a great job in educating us on how to grow and save,” she said.
“But when it comes to marketing and selling our produce according to their quality and quantity, that is where our problem is.”
