Violence in Porgera seen as threat

BUSINESSES in Porgera, Enga, are under threat following an alcohol-related fight and burning of houses, Porgera Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Nickson Pakea says.
Pakea has called on  the police to attend to the  matter immediately and have it resolved.
The fight broke out between the Apalaka villagers living in the mining area and a group from Laiagam and other clans.
Pakea said the mine has benefited the Porgera Development Authority and Enga provincial administration and there was no reason why the police should  delay operations to restore normalcy in the mining area.
“Pogera mine generates most of the province’s income and should be a priority area of focus for the Enga provincial administration in regards
to law and order operations,” he said.
“There should be effective law and order operations to monitor and safeguard the mine site as well as other businesseshouses within the district.”
