THE volleyball nets at the Taurama Aquatic Centre will be packed with powerful spikes, brickwall blocks and great saves from Sept 12-18 as 74 teams from 18 associations around the country battle it out for supremacy in the men’s and women’s open and Under-21 divisions at the 42nd National Volleyball Open and Junior Championships.
Eleven-time men’s champions, Vabukori Amateur Volleyball Association, will be out to defend their title ,while four-time women’s titlists, Fairfax Volleyball Asssociation, of Port Moresby are gunning for their fifth championship.
In the U21 men’s division, Vava are gunning for their third consecutive title while the NCD Volleyball Association have their eyes set on bagging their third strap in the U21 women’s competition.
PNG Volleyball Federation secretary-general Kila Oli said the new comers to the national scene would be Gomore, Irupara, Gavuone villages in Central, Mirigini from Hanuabada, Popondetta Urban from Oro and Seabirds from Gulf. Each division will be divided into four pools except for the U21 women which will only have two.
The games will serve-off with U21 matches on Monday with the opening ceremony on Wednesday where the finals for the division will be held.
The open competition starts on Thursday.
