Voter registration in Moresby begins today

VOTER registration in the National Capital District begins today with the Electoral Commission yesterday urging all eligible voters to register.
The commission’s NCD manager Terence Hetinu said this yesterday after a “walk for enrolment” from Jack Pidik Park at 5-Mile to Ela Beach as part of its enrolment awareness programme.
He said the two-week exercise would end on December 12 with another seven days allowed to fix up discrepancies.
Hetinu said unlike the past, commission staff would not go from house-to-house, but have enrolment spots at various parts of the city.
He said because of funding problems the normal 30-day enrolment period had been reduced to 14 days.
“Enrolment teams will be positioned at strategic locations like markets, churches, landmark areas or gazetted polling areas,” Hetinu told The National.
He said this was also because of enrollment abuse in the past where “ghost names” were entered. “We want to discourage that kind of practice which has happened in the past, so we limited forms to a limited number of people,” Hetinu said.
“There are 271 locations in the city with a team allocated for each location.”
He was confident that most people in the city were already on the existing 2012 roll and this update would enroll new names.
“We will be removing dead persons from the roll,” Hetinu said.
“We have received about 45,000 names from, the coroner’s office – which is the most-credible place to get names of dead people.”
