Police in Popondetta have shot an alleged drug dealer who has been on the run for years.
Police know him as a drug trafficker between Morobe and Northern.
Northern police commander Chief Inspector Lincoln Gerari told The National that the man from West Sepik was shot at the New Guinea Compound (settlement) on Saturday and died hours later.
Gerari said the man, who lived in New Guinea was among a group of young men who were drinking homebrew when police arrived.
“We got a tip-off that the young boys at New Guinea Compound were having a party with homebrew and our men surrounded them. They were caught unaware and most of them fled while the drug dealer was in the process of escaping when the police fired a warning shot,” Gerari said.
“We didn’t know he was shot, he was bleeding and was rushed to the hospital where he died hours later.”
Gerari said police retrieved 37 rolls of marijuana and four high-powered firearms from the drug dealer.
Gerari said the alleged drug dealer was nabbed once before, but escaped and had been  on the run for many years.
“This is another incident from the controversial New Guinea Compound which will soon be demolished and the settlers evicted,” Gerari said.
“There have been reports of continuous killings and damage to properties by youths from this compound and I am awaiting approval
from authorities to get rid of this settlement.”
