WANTOK continued their good form by edging out newcomers Goldie 1-0 in the men’s A-League competition of the NCD Public Service Soccer Association staged at Bomana Police Training College Oval on Saturday.
After a scoreless opening half, Wantok, dominated by Central players, outsmarted the Goldie Barracks side to win the match.
Coached by Eric Komeng, Wantok dominated possession but failed to convert that into points, while Andrew Marampau Jr’s side did not give in easily and put up a tough challenge for their opponents, making them work hard for a shot at goal.
The game was equally-contested in both halves.
Wantok scored 22 minutes into the first-half, with striker Ila Kali placing the ball unchallenged to take the lead.
In the second-half, the Goldie side, led by Elijah Pettyson, Xavier Nixon, Daniel Wasang and Albert Bunat gave their best but could not equalise, leaving Wantok to walk away with the three competition points.
In the other A-League matches played on Saturday, Pom Souths brushed aside a strong challenge from Steel Bars to draw while John Kapi-Natto’s Masters also drew with City United 0-0.
The A-League match may have stolen the show but the performance of Kalibobo in the competition’s B-League division won the hearts of many.
Led by Team Madang’s soccer representative Jordon Kaven, Charles Boki, Jordan Bann, Simeon Karup and Cyril Ivap, Kalibobo proved too strong for Blue Kumuls to win their match 2-0.
Kaven, from Malala in Bogia, had too much pace and energy, outsmart ing his opponent to slam home a goal in each half.
The results of other B-League matches played on Saturday were not available by the time the paper went to press.
Results; A-League Men’s –  Wantoks 1 vs Goldie FC 0, POM Souths 0 vs Steel Bar 0, Masters 0 vs City United 0; B-League Men’s – Kalibobo Unit 2 vs Blue Kumuls 0
