HELA Wigmen scored a hard-fought 30-24 win over the Waghi Tumbe in their round 11 Digicel Cup fixture at the National Football Stadium on Saturday.
In the other Digicel Cup match, the Agmark Gurias posted 18-12 win over the Port Moresby Vipers.
The East New Britons should have won by a bigger margin had they not been denied three tries in the opening 10 minutes.
In the day’s opening encounter, the Wigmen-Tumbe game quickly turned into a battle of attrition as both packs were content to belt each other with the Helas holding their nerving to run out winners after 80 bruising minutes.
After an even opening 40 minutes, the Helas were able to kick on from the 60th minute to post victory.
Wigmen coach Rodney Puname was disappointed his men could not complete their sets, saying his side looked like a team of beginners at times with their ball handling.
“We didn’t play well but we somehow started to regain momentum and I reminded the boys that we couldn’t take any side for granted at this stage,” Puname said.
“They really put us to the test and I said we had to work overtime for the win.”
