WOMEN participation in business was the focus of the inaugural Westpac Day Market held on Saturday in Port Moresby.
It was held to provide a platform for women businesses to have exposure and to allow the bank to interact and assist in their operations, according to Westpac managing director Adrian Hughes.
“It’s the first of its kind. Today we are having a market place to give women an opportunity to showcase what they can do. There’s a lot of small businesswomen here selling a range of products and wares,” Hughes said.
“I am thrilled to see the turnout. We have about 50 stall holders and all of them are women who are making a contribution through their businesses. It is great for the local economy, great for their confidence and great for PNG.
“All big businesses start small and hopefully this provides a way for women in business to gain confidence and exposure to scale up.
“We want to be the bank of choice for women. So if a woman is thinking about their banking arrangement, they choose Westpac.
“This is part of the bank’s support to the community it operates in and to support woman in business.
“This can be seen in the Banks WOW Awards. We will soon be announcing educational grants for woman as the banks initiative to further their education in order women to contribute to their community more.”
The Westpac Day Market was also held in Fiji. It may be staged in other centres in PNG depending on the feedback.
