Youths clean city, discourage residents from littering

YOUTHS from a settlement in Lae, Morobe, have taken the initiative to clean the central business district and are urging residents not to litter.
The youths are from Banana Block along Seventh Street in Ward Two of the Lae Urban local-level government area.
The youths have started to clean the main bus stop at toptown and will cover the whole town area from Ninth Street to Lae District Office and down towards St Mary’s Catholic Church.
Spokesperson and community leader Moses Umba told The National that the youths and the community from the settlement had decided to clean the area.
Umba said Lae MP John Rosso intended to restore the city to its former glory and his community wanted to be part of the change.
“Our youths from the settlement have been branded with bad name tags and we want to change that,” he said.
“We are doing the cleaning for free and I appeal to every youth to join hands to clean the city.”
Umba urged youths from other settlements to refrain from informal activities like selling betel nuts and cigarettes at the main bus stop.
“I appeal to every resident, bus operator and crew not to litter when coming into town,” he said.
Umba is appealing to business houses in the area to support the youths with rakes, gloves, shovels and waste bins to clean the city.
