‘Act finally a law’

A LOT of people, including women, had contributed to the National Council of Women Act becoming a reality, an official says.
Dr Eric Kwa, the Constitutional Law Reform Commission secretary and legal advisor to the National Council of Women said that when interim presidents from the 22 provinces met to discuss the legislation.
“The Act has finally become law after a long process and we have a lot of people to thank,” Kwa said.
The Act aims to:
Provide an organisation to promote and strengthen women’s role in country;
promote equal participation of women and strengthen women’s role in the country;
maximise women’s participation in the development of the country;
support Government in the promotion of policies, laws, programmes and activities that eliminate all forms of discrimination against women; and,
Promote, strengthen and pursue the interest of women at all levels.

Department for Community Development official Gayle Tatsi praised the workshop saying it “is a sign that the National Council of Women is moving forward.”
