CHRISTMAS is just around the corner and the coloured Christmas lights in the city are already bringing the festive cheer.
Children and city residents turned up in numbers on Wenesday to witness the official opening of the Christmas lights at Jack Pidik Park at 5 mile.
NCD Governor Powes Parkop officially switched on the colourful Christmas lights and extended his invitation to all city residents to spend time with families and friends at the park and enjoy the scene.
He said one of the objectives behind setting up the Christmas lights was to put the people into proper festive mood.
Parkop said Christmas was a time of the year where we should celebrate joyfully, peacefully and moderately and not a time to incite fight, be violent and cause accidents.
He added that the objective behind setting up the scenes was for city residents to take back their night space, which had been subjected to fear and violence by a minority.
“We, the city residents should be free to enjoy ourselves be it day or night,” said Parkop.
He assured the public that there would be security guards and policemen patrolling the grounds to ensure there was peace for families to enjoy the nights.
The initiative of setting up Christmas lights started in 2008 and had since gained popularity.
