THE Sir John Guise Stadium indoor complex erupted last night, when the majority of the crowd at the kickboxing qualifying bouts, witnessed the “Black Thunder” Maxii Kanea of Team Souths delivered an entertaining and no-nonsense display to outclass his opponent in the second fight of the night under the senior 69-73kg.
He also qualified for the next round.
The Bougainvillean Highlander as introduced by kickboxing boss Stanley Nandex took all open points on offer without hesitation in the ring, stunning his opponent from Western Highlands with deadly fists and feet.
Opponent Bobby Meta had answers in patches, but not enough rope in the muscles to withstand the continuous punishment dished out by Kanea.
The Black Thunder’s total dominance, cheered on by his countrymen was finally halted by the ring of the bell.
Kanea, of mixed Kangu Beach in Bougainville and Southern Highlands, won gold at the last Games in Goroka.
However, his gold came in boxing and he no doubt has a medal chance in kickboxing.
The qualifying fights for the division continued into late last night for the seniors 74-84kg and the juniors 74-79kg divisons.
Preliminary bouts fought over the last two nights ultimately qualified the winners of each bout to advance to the quarters and then the semifinals.
Team NCD are favourites for the divisions they are involved in with the likes of Dickson Dii and David Lembo in the seniors 63kg-68kg, leading a contingent of well-skilled fighters.
