TENANTS living in the National Housing Corporation hostel in North Waigani, NCD, are up in arms because they claim the corporation wants to evict them.
More than 150 tenants claim that the NHC is breaching  a National Court order preventing their eviction.
The tenants in a statement said: “Despite the existing National Court order (WS609 of 2010) of 9 June, 2010, restraining the NHC from evicting the tenants of North Waigani Hostel, the Minister for Housing, board and management of NHC have resolved to conduct the eviction at the hostel on Dec 9.
Spokesman for the tenants Emmanuel Mungu urged the Central Supply and Tenders Board to verify if they had been consulted in the recent tendering
of the property.
In response, the NHC denied evicting tenants saying their officers were there on Saturday with the assistance of police to put up notices reminding “illegal tenants” to vacate the property.
The notice read: “This is to advise all tenants in Waigani Hotel that those tenants (legal or illegal) whose names are not on list of plaintiffs in proceeding No.WS609 of 2010 to vacate the property by Monday the 05 of December 2011. Failure to adhere to this notice will result in the forceful eviction without further notice.”
NHC acting managing director Tarcissius Muganaua said the organisation would not evict the 64 legal tenants whose names appeared on the court order but said the “illegal tenants” must vacate the property.
