‘Education a tool for development’
The National, Tuesday February 9th, 2016
EDUCATION is a vital tool for thye country to develop, says a senior statesman in East New Britain.
Former governor-general Grand Chief Sir Paulias Matane said in Rabaul that education was an important tool for development for individuals, families and communities.
He said quality education was the key to promoting good leadership.
“I remember teaching a young bright student in Grade 3 in a community school in Rabaul. I was the headmaster then,” Matane said.
“Now, I am a proud old man to see this young student serving this country as a man with dignity, respect, humility, integrity and commitment. He is now a politician; Dr Allan Marat.”
He told teachers at the opening of the academic year in East New Britain that education was an important component in one’s life.
“No education means no knowledge and we cannot do anything productive in life,” he said.
Sir Paulias urged teachers to be committed to their duties and ensure to value each child in their class as important as all other students.
Sir Paulias was among other guests and senior public servants who attended the academic year opening at Malaguna Technical High School in Rabaul last Friday.
Many schools throughout the province from Pomio, Gazelle, Rabaul and Kokopo districts closed for the day to allow teachers to attend the academic year opening.
Similar programmes had been organised in other provinces at different dates to recognise the beginning of the academic year.
