A COMMUNITY leader wants the Angoram by-election postponed due to continuous flooding in the district.

Luimack Johnson, a community leader and kukurai in the Angoram and adjoining Bogia district of Madang, said homes had been badly damaged and there was a lack of clean water and medicine.

“Normally there’s six months of rain and the people store food and water to last them through that period,” he said. “But the rain has not stopped after six months and the people are running out of basic medicine and clean water. A report from the national disaster office confirms that women and children have died because of lack of clean water and basic medicine.

“We need basic services to reach these areas. People are displaced from their homes and are living in Bogia, Madang and Wewak and most of them cannot make it back in time for the elections. Can the election be moved for another six months?”
