‘Speed up Oro hydro project’

 LANDOWNERS of the Divune hydro-power project in Nothern’s Sohe district wants work on the multi-million-kina project to be fast tracked.

Landowners Micah Penina and Roderick Vana called on Northern Governor Suckling Tamanabae  and Sohe MP Anthony Nene to help fast track the development of the project 

so that people in the district could enjoy the benefits.

Vana said the groundbreaking for the project was held last September and construction was supposed to take place on Jan 11, under the agreement signed between the developer PNG Power  Ltd and the government.

“Time has passed and the construction phase has not even begun yet,” he said. 

“We call upon the governor and Sohe MP to see to it that work is done on the project site because the people of Sohe are looking forward to benefit from it.” 

He said the project was overdue as feasibility studies on that was first started in 1983, more than 28 years ago.

“It took that long because of land dispute problems and other affairs,” he added.

Vana said they had settled land differences and landowners had realised the benefits it would bring as well as 

the potential in improving the lifestyle and livelihood of the people.

“We want development and would like to see that we have access to electricity in the next few years under this project,” he said.
